The gig economy is a great way to be your own boss and make some extra cash, and if you can drive being an Uber driver can be a good job . So, how do you sign up to become an Uber driver in London?

This simple step by step guide will take a quick look at what it takes to sign up to be an Uber driver.

The requirements

First things first, if you want to become an Uber driver in London, you’ll need to tick the following boxes.

  • Be over 21
  • Have at least 3 years driving experience
  • Have a valid UK driving licence – you will need to convert any foreign licence before application
  • Have an approved and working smartphone or tablet
  • Have an eligible car
  • Have a PCO licence
  •

Getting the PCO licence can be done as part of the process of setting up as an Uber driver. So, let’s look at how you sign up.

Private Hire Licence a.k.a PCO licence.

Register for an Uber Ignition appointment

Uber offer a free assistance service to help drivers get set up. This includes getting the essential PCO licence, which is the certificate from Transport for London (TfL) that allows you to legally work as an Uber driver.

Schedule your appointment here, and make sure you have all of the followng:

 Get a medical check up

Before you get to your Uber Ignition appointment, make sure to go to your doctor and ask them for a Private Hire Medical check. They’ll do some tests including eye tests to make sure you’re fit to be a driver.

Take along a printed copy of form TPH/204, and make sure the GP signs it.  You will need to take along this completed form before you sign up to be an Uber driver.

Get an Enhanced DBS Check

This criminal record background check is also an important prerequisite before you sign up to become an Uber driver in London. You can do it yourself by following the instructions on the Gov.uk site here.

It can take around 8 weeks for the form to be returned, so this is something you should start right at the beginning of your application.

Start your application to be an Uber driver

With the medical form, and the DBS form, you can then start the actual process of applying to be an Uber driver in London. This is the Private Hire Licence Application, or PHLV.

You can apply here on Uber’s site. You will need to pay £310 for the application.

Do the topographical test

Once you’ve submitted your PHLV application you can apply to take the topographical test at an Uber centre. This costs £50 and it is required to become an Uber driver in London.

The test is basically a map reading test, to make sure you can read a map and navigate around London. Considering black cab drivers have to do ‘the knowledge’, this is a much simpler process.
